Events & Programs

The Great Old Book Sale

Twice a year, in the spring and fall, the Friends hold a fund raising book sale. This event takes place in the Library Program Room and provides a wonderful opportunity for the public to recycle gently used books and to purchase items at bargain prices. A wide selection of books, periodicals, audio materials, and videos are available. Many volunteers are needed to assist with the sale.

Annual Meeting

This fall event provides an opportunity for the Head Librarian, officers of the Friends, and guest speakers to communicate with assembled members.

Author Events

Author readings and talks are supported, and the annual Holiday Author and Book Fair is a favorite Library event showcasing local authors.

Adult, Teen, and Children’s Programs

The Friends sponsor literary, musical, craft, and other programs for all age levels at the Library.

Endowment Fund

To maintain our beautiful library, the Friends have established The Endowment Fund, a long–term investment to help safeguard the building's ongoing maintenance and upkeep. While the City of Newburyport's general budget allows for the operation and staffing of the Library, monies from The Endowment Fund are used to supplement capital and technology improvements.

Other Fundraising Activities

The Friends engage in activities to raise funds for the Library, including the sales of library book bags, note cards, and postcards. These items can be purchased at the Library's Circulation Desk.

Museum Passes

The Friends fund a number of museum passes each year for the Library. These passes allow library users free or reduced cost entry to certain museums in the greater Boston area. These passes are very popular and may be reserved in advance.

Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help support the many Friends events and programs throughout the year. Opportunities include publicity for events, sorting books for the book sale, working at the book sale, providing refreshments for events, working on the newsletter, grant writing, and coordinating a fund raising effort. Interested in volunteering? Contact the Friends at 978–462–8059, or fill out a Friends Volunteer Form at the Library.

Newsletter

Footnotes, the pdf iconFriends newsletter is published periodically throughout the year. It includes a note from the Friends President, reports of upcoming events, library news, and other features. The newsletter is sent to all members of the Friends, and is also available at the Library or online.
