An unusual supernatural family...
Savvy by Ingrid Law This 2009 Newbery Honor book is about a girl named Mississippi (Mibs) Beaumont who is part of a very unusual family; when each member turns thirteen they gain a supernatural ability. Right before her thirteenth birthday Mibs’ father is injured in a car accident. Convinced that her power will help her father, she sets off to find and heal him. She hitches a ride, along with her brothers and the preacher’s son, on a traveling salesman’s bus with his pink bibles. They realize they’re in trouble when the bus heads in the wrong direction and they are being followed by the police. Throughout the journey Mibs begins to develop her savvy which isn’t what she expected or wanted. This is great book for children and families to read together. Recommended for grades 5 – 7 if read independently or for grades 3 and up if being read to.
