Event Great Sorrow & Sore Affliction Among Us: Throat Distemper of 1735

March 7, 2019 | 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

In 1735, a deadly epidemic swept the east coast of Colonial America. The ailment, now thought to be a particularly virulent form of diphtheria, arose in Kingston, New Hampshire, and cruelly decimated the population, primarily targeting children and young mothers.

Curator Barbara Rimkulas of the Exeter Historical Society will trace the plague and its lasting effects on the region.

Program generously funded by the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library.
