This September, the only gundalow in the world is coming to the Merrimack River for a week of programs. Join us for this informative program about the history of the gundalow in advance of the boat's arrival.
A gundalow is a shallow drafted type of cargo barge which was once quite common in the Merrimack River. Gundalows were the equivalent of today's tractor-trailer rigs, carrying freight of up to 50 tons between ocean-going schooners and the growing towns and industries along the river.
During this presentation, educators from Portsmouth's Gundalow Company will share photos and models and talk about the history of these once common vessels on our local waters.
