Event Urban Renewal: Demolition or Restoration. Newburyport’s Story

July 29, 2019 | 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Join us at the Newburyport Public Library as we celebrate Yankee Homecoming!

Back by popular demand! Like many communities in the early 1960s, Newburyport was at an economic crossroads. Factories closed, storefronts were boarded up, and the new wave of shopping malls swept through the country. Only one official signature away, urban renewal threatened to demolish our historic downtown and replace it with a modern shopping center. Ghlee E. Woodworth will take you through a visual journey to learn how the community and its citizens came together to save the charm and character of the historic downtown.

As this talk is expected to possibly exceed our room capacity, we will be handing out free tickets starting at 6:30 pm.

Please note that attendance at today's 5:00 pm Yankee Homecoming lecture does not guarantee patrons a seat at the 7:00 pm lecture. Patrons wishing to attend this event will need to get a second ticket at 6:30 pm.
